Subterfuge

Sometimes when you hear a word, and you know you’ve heard it before, it always sounds like it couldn’t even be a word. Whether you use it in normal conversations or on rare occassions or whether you hear it in your favorite show or read it in a novel, it sounds like it came out of nowhere. Tonight, I came across one of those words and I thought it was good enough for a post after I looked it up.
subterfuge – n. 1. A deceptive stratagem or device: “the paltry subterfuge of an anonymous signature†(Robert Smith Surtees). 2. something intended to misrepresent the true nature of an activity; “he wasn’t sick–it was just a subterfuge”.
