Back In The Day…

I could have been an artist. At some point in my teenage life, I spent more time sketching, than playing videogames. It was a hobby that I was more passionate about than collecting and reading comics. I often wish I had followed this passion thru to the present. But my parents’ aspirations for me to be a doctor, accountant, or even a priest, got in my way. Naturally, I rebelled. I wish I had rebelled the way in which I would have gone away to college, gone into liberal arts and graduated with a Fine Arts degree in Illustration or something like that. But I was tired of studying and homework and my parents’ pressuring me. I left. Joined the Marine Corps and got stationed on the west coast. I continued to collect comics but never really could get back into drawing.
The above sketch is of Magneto, in case you couldn’t tell. I started this sketch while I was stationed at 29 Palms, California. Serena mentioned that the subject for the sketch of the week over on the forums of Aspen Comics was Magneto. I dug up the sketchbook and showed it to her. She immediately wanted me to post it up at the forums. After a few finishing touches, I decided it was worthy enough to be scanned and posted. I probably could get back into sketching but I don’t think I’ll ever get my skills as refined as Serena’s or my brother, Justin’s. Plus it brings back too many memories of an uneasy childhood.
