Tidying Up Messy Cables

by on Nov.04, 2008, under As Random As Random Gets

With all of the living room stuff moved in, I decided to take a break and work on organizing the cables laying on the ground at Serena’s PC desk. I remember my cousin Jason getting the Signum Cable management rack from IKEA.

I also remember installing it for him and what a pain in the ass it was. But it was the best solution I’ve seen so far in keeping your cables off of the floor and out of site. So I picked up two of them, one for my desk and one for Serena’s. It still was a pain in the ass, but quicker to install since the desk was empty. I layed the desk, front side down and found a spot behind the kickboard to set up the rack. Unfortunately the rack was to deep and there wasn’t enough overhang on her desk. So I took the claw and of the hammer (OLD BOY style) and carefully bent one side of the rack from 45 degrees to 90 degrees. The newly squared side would allow the rack to be mounted on the desk overhang without sticking too far out from the back.

Signum Rack Installed and Cable Nice and Neat

I wound the cables around the teeth of the rack. After all the cables were in place, I zip-tied them to the rack so that they wouldn’t fall off. Enough slack was allowed so that the connections could be made without causing any tension. I then covered the slack with the Cable Zipper from The Container Store.

No more messy wires on the floor!

I can’t wait to do this to my desk. I’ll have to wait for the weekend though. Even though the install was easier, it still took some time. I still have a lot of moving to do and it has to be done by the end of the week.
