Batman: Arkham Asylum – Hand-to-Hand Combat Gameplay
by LoneWolf on Apr.30, 2009, under Nerd Alert, On Teh Internets
Eidos Interactive and Rocksteady Games have released another video for their upcoming title, Batman: Arkham Asylum, for us to drool over. This video features the hand-to-hand combat gameplay that features what’s been trademarked as the FreeFlow combat system. This combat system allows the player to chain a near infinite amount of combos seamlessly. This makes taking on mobs of Joker’s henchmen a lot more easier and brutally fun. As you’ll see in the video below, the player can initiate an attack on any one enemy and chain his attacks at any given moment, whether it’s landing the first punch and then immediately counterattacking another opponent, or finishing off one opponent then effortlessly jump kicking your next target.
Pretty FRAKKING COOL, right?! Gamers that are also fans of the Batman comic books, as well as fans of the Chris Nolan Batman movies, will truly get a kick out of the hand-to-hand combat gameplay. Instead of seeing in the comics and/or on film, they’ll get to step into the cape and cowl experience what it’s like to be a masterful hand-to-hand fighter. I’ve already experienced this on a demo at the Game$top I sometimes work at. Despite it being on the PS3 and therefore forcing me to use a DualShock 3 controller, the combat system proves to be as advertised on their website, free-flowing with near unlimited combos seamless transitions.
On a side note, I stumbled across an AWFUL article bashing the game because the writer did approve of Batman’s videogame costume design. Claiming that it looked like Batman had ‘powered gauntlets and boots’ and that the developers shouldn’t have redesigned Batman in this fashion. From my experience with the demo, the henchmen took up to 5 hits before getting knocked out. I fail to see how his claims are true because of my experience. If Batman had powered gauntlets, those henchmen would be knocked out in one blow, and therefore would make the awesome combat system pointless to have in the game. So it’s obvious that this writer is a BIG FRAKKING IDIOT.
Naturally, I felt inclined to defend the developers’ design of The Dark Knight as well as school him on who Batman is cause he obviously didn’t have a frakking clue.
The official website is up and I would like to point out to you that it has a character BIOs section. http://www.batmanarkhamasylum.com/characters
Please note that under Batman’s attributes the bullet points you should really play close attention to are:
# Arsenal of gadgets, vehicles, and advanced technology
# Inventor, detective, genius-level intelligenceWith that in mind, why would you think that Batman would not have developed ‘powered gauntlets and boots’ if he needed to? And how do you know he didn’t invent them in a way that improves both his stealth and fighting abilities? So even if they look clunky, they probably wouldn’t make all this noise you claim they would. Do you need to be reminded that Batman is in peak physical form and a master of martial arts[?] He could wear tap shoes and still not make a sound.
After all, this is a game about a comic book character. Batman has gone through many costume changes and has added a plethora of gadgets to his arsenal. Furthermore, artists who have the honor of penciling a Batman comic book have always had their own interpretation of how the Batman looks. Now with that in mind, the design of Batman in the new game is by far one of the coolest I’ve ever seen and falls right up there with artists like Jim Lee and Neil Adams. It takes a bit of the comic book design with the live action film designs. And for a videogame, this works just fine.
Hopefully you’ll consider doing a bit more research before writing another awful article.
You can read the article if you want. But you’ll just end up wasting your time reading that garbage and I don’t want you to do that. So please don’t. You’ll just get angry at the idiot who wrote the article and at me for showing it to you.
Batman: Arkham Asylum is due out on June 23rd August 25th. If you haven’t reserved your copy, you’ll miss out on the exclusive pre-order code to unlock a special Villian Challenge mode which will be handed out to you when you pick it up. I’ve already reserved my copy: The Collector’s Edition!
