To Boldy Re-Imagine Star Trek Like No One Has Done Before

Serena and I, just got back from our 2nd screening of STAR TREK. Serena and I first saw STAR TREK on it’s opening night this past Thursday, and in IMAX. THIS MOVIE IS THE ONE TO WATCH TO START YOUR SUMMER MOVIE WATCHING SEASON! Everything about this movie is AWESOME: the cast, the story, everything. I was a BIG skeptic when I heard that J.J. Abrams was working on bringing Star Trek back to the silver screen. With me, J.J.Abrams is hit or miss. I’m rather picky. I didn’t enjoy CLOVERFIELD, and I didn’t get into ALIAS or LOST. I love FRINGE in much the same way I love STAR TREK. The writing is exceptional and the cast and crew are passionate about delivering an engaging experience.
The biggest question I had in my mind prior to watching this film was, “How do you do a prequel to a series with a long history and not ruin it by going against it’s well established canon?” This question, I’m sure was in the mind of every Trekkie and ‘casual’ fan (Trekkie in denial). To keep from ruining it for me, I kept very little watch on any and all media that talked about STAR TREK while it was in production. I kept from reading any articles that had major spoilers and confined my media viewing strictly to the official trailers. When I saw that there was going to be a comic book prequel to this… prequel, I forced myself to look the other way and wait to buy the graphic novel collecting all 4 comics. The waiting paid off as I bought the graphic novel a day before seeing the movie. The graphic novel, Star Trek: Countdown, was a primer that ends where the movie begins. It could have well been part of the movie, but logistically, would have seemed out of place. It isn’t quite necessary for you to read it before watching the movie, but any fan will enjoy this graphic novel as a nice lead in to the movie.
One of the most impressive things about the movie was that you really got a sense of how huge the Enterprise is with scenes that go beyond the ship’s bridge and great cinematography. From the factory like engine room with it’s maze of catwalks, pipes and machinery, to the long hallways connection the different parts of the ship, to the scenes of the ship maneuvering out in the huge expanse of space, you feel and believe in this ship as you would should you ever set foot on an aircraft carrier of today. Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman did an awesome job with the writing. Not only was the story engaging, but it allowed for each of the core members of the Enterprise’s bridge crew stand out in their own right. It wasn’t just about Kirk and Spock. McCoy, Uhura, Sulu, Chekov, and Scotty were essential in development of the two of them as well as each other. Making this the Original Series bridge crew probably the most memorable one amongst the whole franchise. Blended with great visual effects and some of the most jaw-dropping space sequences, STAR TREK is a movie that any sci-fi movie buff would enjoy watching from start to finish. This chill flick is definitely a summer blockbuster and a great way to start your summer movie watching season if you were smart enough to avoid last week’s supposed summer movie blockbuster. And no, I don’t mean GHOST OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST (which I actually wanna see, not because of Jennifer Garner but because of Matthew McConaughey).
Verdict: HUGE SUCCESS!

Who was your favorite character? I really dug Chris Pine’s take on Kirk…but I gotta give it up to Karl Urban as Bones. He was hilarious.
And I think the award for ODDEST cameo doesn’t go to Winona Ryder…but to TYLER PERRY as that…black starfleet judge guy. HAHA I was like…what the f? Madea goes to Starfleet instead of Jail. Buahaha

Yeah Karl Urban as Bones was LEGENDARY! Dude, I thought I knew who that Starfleet judge guy was, I just didn’t recognize Tyler Perry without the wig and ‘big momma’s house’ costume. LOL
