GameStop Powers Up Their Edge Card
by LoneWolf on Sep.29, 2010, under Nerd Alert

GameStop’s discount card, The Edge Card, is upgrading its benefits and will be called the PowerUp Rewards program. The program is no longer in Beta and will be implemented some time next month. I’m calling it the PowerUp Card whereas corporate refers to it as PUR. I’m not sure if its pronounced as ‘purr’ or ‘pure’. With the PowerUp Card, members will only need to present their card at their favorite GameStop location, which is usually 1 out of 5 stores in a 5 mile radius, to make a reservation, trade and purchase. The card will store everything from profile info, points earned and trade credits.
The PowerUp Card comes in two flavors, like Xbox LIVE: Free (Silver) and Pro (Gold).
With the PowerUp Free, members get the following benefits:
- Earn 10 points for every dollar spent on: NEW games, accessories, strategy guides, and consoles.
- Earn 20 points for every dollar spent on pre-owned games and accessories and for every game or console traded in (no limit).
- Redeem points for a wide variety of rewards – special merchandise you can’t get anywhere else!
- Members also get:
- Early access to gaming news
- Invitations to members-only events and sales
- Members-only specials and discounts
- Member-only birthday offer
- Reservation pick-up bonuses on select titles
- One automatic entry per transaction (limit one per day) in a monthly drawing for the Epic Rewards Giveaway; one-of-a-kind trips and experiences available only through GameStop. i.e. Trips to San Diego Comic-Con, e3, PAX etc.
- If members purchase a gift card, they will not accrue points, but purchases with a gift card are eligible to accrue points.
- No expiration date on the PowerUp Free card.
Points can also be earned by doing the following:
- Complete the online activation, along with the profile and gaming preferences nets you 250 points.
- Upgrade to the PowerUp Pro card nets you 250 points.
- Establish a Game Library (probably via your online profile) and get another 250 points.
- Participate in online surveys get you various point values depending on the survey.
Points WILL EXPIRE in 12 months if there is no qualifying purchase activity.
With the PowerUp Pro, which is the 1 year subscription for $14.99, you get:
- ALL OF THE BENEFITS OF POWERUP FREE… PLUS:
- An additional 10% bonus points applied to ALL purchases.
- 10% off pre-owned games and accessories *currently offered with the paid EDGE card subscription
- 10% bonus trade credit on games and accessories*
- 10% off strategy guides (not sure if it will be 20% when bought with the game, as that’s what is currently offered with EDGE)
- 12-month subscription to GameInformer magazine which will be available as a physical or digital subscription
- Special B2G1 (Buy 2 Get 1) Free welcome offer (on pre-owned products only)
- DOUBLE entries into the monthly Epic Reward Giveaway with every transaction (limit one per day).
- If PRO members do not renew after 12 months, they will automatically be downgraded to the FREE membership.
The only thing I don’t like, so far, is that the points expire after a year. What if there isn’t anything worth redeeming my hard earned points for? The Rewards swag being offered better be of LEGIT quality before I consider making more than one purchase a month at GameStop.
