It’s New Comic Book Day – Keith’s Komix 15th Anniversary Edition!

by on Sep.26, 2010, under A Comic Book Guy and His Comics

This past Friday, Keith’s Komix celebrated its 15th Anniversary! Serena and I received the party invite 2 weeks prior and decided to hold off on picking up our pull until that Friday night when everything would be 35% off! We did pick up one or two comic books each Wednesday prior to that Friday just to hold us over til then. We got there around 7pm and got some pizza fresh from the oven of Mario’s Pizza next door. Brandon, Keith’s son, was selling Boy Scout’s popcorn and there were cooler filled with ice and various drinks (non-alcoholic of course). We grabbed ourselves some pizza and pop and mingled for a bit. It was a pretty nice turn out. Serena didn’t bring her camera but Cathy, Keith’s wife, had hers and took some cool pics of the festivities. On top of our pull, we each picked up a graphic novel and I picked up more supplies to sort and organize the 4 months of comics I have sitting by my desk.

So here’s what we picked up:

  • BATGIRL # 14
  • BATMAN # 703
  • BATMAN AND ROBIN # 14
  • BATMAN: STREETS OF GOTHAM # 16
  • BIRDS OF PREY # 5
  • BOOSTER GOLD # 36

  • MINDFIELD # 3
  • THOR: FIRST THUNDER # 1
  • POWER GIRL # 16
  • RED ROBIN # 16
  • TITANS # 27
  • X-23 # 1

So many great books in this pick up! No individual issues have been chosen! But here’s my reading order list:

  1. All things BRIGHTEST DAY
  2. All things BATMAN
  3. Non-Marvel titles
  4. Graphic Novels
  5. Marvel titles

MY GRAPHIC NOVEL PICK: DAREDEVIL: YELLOW

DAREDEVIL: YELLOW

COVER BY: TIM SALE
WRITER: JEPH LOEB
PENCILS: TIM SALE
THE STORY:
“The measure of a man is not in how he gets knocked to the mat, it is in how he gets up.” Those are the words blind attorney Matthew Murdock’s father lived and died by. Prizefighter Battlin’ Jack Murdock’s murder set in motion a chain of events that exploded with a new super hero swinging out of New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen – the blind Acrobat Daredevil. In this retelling of the early career of the Man Without Fear, the Eisner Award-winning team of Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale (Spider-Man: Blue, Batman: The Long Halloween) have taken an inspiring action-adventure story and blended it with a romantic comedy. The result, highlighted by Sale’s dazzling ink washes and Matt Hollingsworth’s spectacular color, is the heartwarming and heartbreaking story of two young people in love – Matthew Murdock and Karen Page. Collecting DAREDEVIL: YELLOW #1-6.

SERENA’S GRAPHIC NOVEL PICK: CINDERELLA: FROM FABLETOWN WITH LOVE

CINDERELLA: FROM FABLETOWN WITH LOVE

Written by CHRIS ROBERSON • Art by SHAWN MCMANUS • Cover by CHRISSIE ZULLO

In this new title collecting the hot 6-issue miniseries from the writer of iZOMBIE, Fabletown’s top agent must stop illegal trafficking in supernatural artifacts. But can Cindy foil the dark plot before Fabletown is exposed to the mundy world? Includes special extras!

On a side note, this post is my 2000th post! And I can’t think of a better post to write up other than one about comic books!

HAPPY READING!

It’s New Comic Book Day!

by on Sep.03, 2010, under A Comic Book Guy and His Comics

We picked up our comic books yesterday at Keith’s Komix since we were both work Wednesday night. A pretty light week which is good since the last few weeks have been rather expensive because we were catching up with our books due to the our comic-con trips over the last two months. This week Serena’s excited about the two new Aspen titles hitting the shelves, The Scourge and Fathom: Blue Descent. I’m still keeping up with Brightest Day and despite the story slowly unraveling, it has managed to keep my interest with the little tid-bits being revealed. There was no Monsterpocalypse going on last night. Keith gave a free movie pass to see STAR TREK at the AMC Streets of Woodfield in IMAX. While it wasn’t a true IMAX, the screen size was a bit bigger and the video and audio quality were definitely of IMAX quality. The only thing I didn’t like were that the seats weren’t remodeled to a stadium style seating. The mini-IMAX seating is just as the same as the regular theater seating.

We did have enough time after the movie to stop back at Keith’s Komix to see the gang and chat for a bit. Syd and I talked about the stupidity of DC retconning Wonder Woman’s origin when they dare not touch Batman’s or Superman’s origin stories. I also picked up more units and monsters for my Subterran army that Keith unboxed while looking for some Elemental Monsters and Units for Syd.

  • BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL # 48
  • BRIGHTEST DAY # 9
  • BUFFY SEASON 8 # 36
  • FATHOM: BLUE DESCENT # 1

Yesterday’s trip to Keith’s Komix had a bit of surprise. ASTONISHING X-MEN # 34 FINALLY hit the shelf! It’s been so long since I read this title that I had completely forgot that the ‘eXogenic’ story by Warren Ellis was still going on.
