It’s New Comic Book Day!

by on Dec.24, 2009, under A Comic Book Guy and His Comics

We stopped in at Keith’s Komix yesterday not just to pick up this week’s stack but to also wish Keith a Merry X-mas and to thank his friend, Jim, for the working Beta Player. A while back, Keith took his daughter to see New Moon. I had mentioned how I saw an ‘edward’ shirt that had Edward James Olmos instead of Edward Cullen. He then said that if there was a shirt with Eddie Munster on it he’d wear it. And guess what? THOR must have heard him for lo and behold I found it here. So Serena and I ordered one and gave that to Keith for X-mas.

Jim was there and I thanked him and told him how well the Beta Player had worked. I asked him how much he wanted for it and he said just $25. Wow. Had he been like those guys on eBay, he’d be asking for at least $100, maybe more because the Beta Player was in much better working condition than those ones I found on eBay. Thanks again Jim!

CAUGHT SERENA’S EYE: THE GOOD NEIGHBORS, BOOK ONE: KIN

THE GOOD NEIGHBORS, BOOK ONE: KIN

Written by Holly Black; Art and Cover by Ted Naifeh

Rue Silver’s mother has disappeared and her father is suspected of killing her. But it’s not that straightforward. Rue is a faerie, like her mother. And her father didn’t kill her mother instead, he broke a promise to Rue’s faerie-king grandfather, causing Rue’s mother to be flung back to the faerie world. Now Rue must go to save her.

Next week, the only comic book coming out and worth picking up is BLACKEST NIGHT # 6. Even with this week being X-mas week, I kinda wish next week was already here.

It’s New Comic Book Day!

by on Dec.21, 2009, under A Comic Book Guy and His Comics

Been pretty busy these last few days with X-mas being right around the corner. However, we still made it to the comic book store last week to pick a hefty stack of comics to read before the holidays take up most of our time. Also, I finally got to test that special item Keith’s friend Jim brought in for me. That item being a BETA tape player. I brought it to my dad’s house and told him it was an early x-mas present if it worked properly. After letting it sit for a half hour, my dad dug up one of our old vacation tapes and we powered up the Beta player. We fast-forward the tape to the end and rewound it back to warm the player up. When we hit play, the picture was a bit odd at the start but after that it was crisp and clean. It was like looking into a window of my past as I saw my 10 year old self on a road trip to Niagara Falls with my family. Times definitely were simpler then.

With the successful test of the Beta player, I have brought my dad one step closer to getting the tapes transferred and preserved on DVD. All he needs now is a TV tuner card on his PC. When he asked me where I got it, I told him I had a good friend at Keith’s Komix (Keith) who had a friend (Jim) that had a player sitting around and I told my dad that if it worked fine, he’d sell it to me. Thanks Keith and Jim for making this X-mas a special one for me and my dad.

    So this week we have:

  • ASTONISHING X-MEN # 33
  • BATMAN # 694
  • BATMAN 80-PAGE GIANT
  • BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL # 39
  • BATMAN: STREETS OF GOTHAM # 7
  • CABLE # 21
  • DEADPOOL: MERC WITH A MOUTH # 6
  • GREEN LANTERN CORPS # 43
  • JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA # 40
  • KOOKABURRA K # 2
  • THE MARVELOUS LAND OF OZ # 2
  • THE OUTSIDERS # 25
  • POWER GIRL # 7
  • X-FACTOR # 200
  • X-FORCE # 22

PICK OF THE WEEK: GREEN LANTERN CORPS # 43

GREEN LANTERN CORPS # 43

Written by Peter J. Tomasi; Art and cover by Pat Gleason and Rebecca Buchman; Variant cover by Ladrönn

Red rain falls! As the Black Lanterns continue their reign of terror and chaos on Oa, things go from bad to worse when a horrible loss for the Green Lantern Corps results in Guy Gardner becoming so enraged that he becomes a Red Lantern! And hell breaks loose as the Central Power Battery faces an attack from the newly arrived Black Lantern Corphans!

From the list above, it looks like I’ve got a lot of reading to be done before X-mas Eve. BLACKEST NIGHT has been full of awesomeness since it first started and looks to keep going strong and finish with a bang. Kyle Raynor is dead! What happens when Guy Gardner becomes a Red Lantern?! I can’t wait to read this issue! I will probably read this one first cause I know I won’t be disappointed.
