It’s New Comic Book Day!

by on Sep.03, 2009, under A Comic Book Guy and His Comics

Pretty light pick up today and I’m thankful for that because last week’s pick up was a killer of funds. This week’s pile is full of worthwhile reading even though there are no BLACKEST NIGHT tie-ins. I don’t really have any real complaints about any title, although Serena’s complaint about how she wished the cover artist of this month’s CABLE, Dave Wilkins, also did the interiors. His portrayal of Hope looks about right whereas the Hope in the interior art looks less like a child and more like a little woman with barely an A-cup. It’s like a woman’s head is drawn a sexless body. I know time-traveling can be confusing but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t age or de-age the the traveler when you can only go forward.

DEADPOOL’s last story arc felt a bit shallow. The title started off full of awesomeness battling Skrulls and then reaching higher levels with the THUNDERBOLTS crossover, MAGNUM OPUS, and then just blowing my mind with the whole battle of wits and the witless with HAWKEYE (aka BULLSEYE). This last arc with the whole pirate motif felt a bit lackluster. With a new arc starting up in this week’s issue, let’s just hope the last story was a calm before the ‘AWESOME’ storm.

    And here we go:

  • BATMAN # 690
  • BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL # 33
  • BUFFY SEASON 8 # 28
  • CABLE # 18
  • DEADPOOL # 15
  • MICE TEMPLAR # 2-3
  • WEDNESDAY COMICS # 9

MY PICK OF THE PILE: BUFFY SEASON 8 # 28

Oh, hello there, gentle viewers . . . This month we revisit Team Buffy and her army of Slayers at Oz’s temple in the mountains of Tibet. Among the yaks, the Slayers and Wiccan troops attempt to suppress dangerous Magicks through meditation and hard labor. Buffy embraces this new lifestyle, but not everyone is convinced that leaving Magicks behind will solve any problems: among them, a resistant Willow, a doubtful Andrew, and a concerned Giles.

For Buffy, the world has not been so peaceful . . . so honest . . . so full of feeling . . . in a long time — too bad it’s not going to stay that way!

BUFFY SEASON EIGHT # 28

I love Jo Chen’s cover artwork. Dark Horse, please put all these fantastic covers in one oversized hardcover filled all kinds of cool extras with an awesome forward by Joss Whedon. I would <3 you 4EVAR!

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON 8 # 22 - SWELL

It’s a pretty light week, which is good. It gives me a chance to catch up some reading and organizing the comics from last month. Seriously, I gonna organize this pile this week! I really enjoyed FINAL CRISIS: LEGION OF THREE WORLDS so far. It has been rather epic as the 3 Legions of Superheroes ban together to stop Super[EMO]boy Prime’s latest temper tantrum. If he doesn’t die at the end of this story arc, I will be really disappointed in DC. I hate this character more than any C-list villain or hero in the DCU. DEADPOOL continues to win my favor even though he will be poorly represented by Ryan Reynolds in the upcoming WOLVERINE: ORIGINS movie. CABLE keeps jumping forward into time and the artwork still doesn’t seem to get better in the future as well. MAGNETO TESTAMENT was a well written yet somber tale of who Magneto was before he donned the cape and helmet. TRINITY keeps building up to something but I’m starting to get bored with the whole 2 stories in one book format. X-MEN FIRST CLASS FINALS… wait, I thought I took this off my pull list? Doh! At least BUFFY SEASON 8 never disappoints.

  • BUFFY SEASON 8 # 22
  • CABLE # 11
  • DEADPOOL # 7
  • FINAL CRISIS: LEGION OF THREE WORLDS # 3
  • TRINITY # 36
  • X-MEN: FIRST CLASS FINALS # 1
  • X-MEN: MAGNETO TESTAMENT # 5

PICKS OF THE PILE:

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON 8 # 20

Acclaimed comic-book writer Jeph Loeb (Batman: The Long Halloween) was set to executive produce, alongside Joss Whedon and animator Eric Wight, the proposed Buffy animated TV series. While Buffy fans won’t be viewing that show anytime soon, Loeb, Wight, and Whedon offer the next best thing–a comic inspired by the animated series!

Jeph Loeb and Eric Wight take the reins on Buffy Season Eight with this very special one-shot joining series artist Georges Jeanty, in a twisted tale picking up from the time-traveling Buffy/Fray crossover.

FINAL CRISIS # 5

Written by Grant Morrison; Art and covers by J.G. Jones, Carlos Pacheco and Jesus Merino
Humanity enslaved! Time shattered and bleeding! Anti-Life triumphant! Can Earth’s demoralized, beaten heroes rally their scattered forces for the ultimate super-battle against the nightmare armies of Apokolips when the forces of good meet the forces of evil on the bridge to Blüdhaven? As Darkseid’s presence causes reality itself to sicken and the lights to go out across the universe, as even the Guardians fall, the true power of the evil gods finally reveals itself, and a major character returns for a shocking conclusion.

Does the secret of humankind’s salvation lie in a mysterious cave painting and a bolt of lightning? Or has the Last Day come for us all?

SERENA’S TOP PICK: THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ # 1

The premiere American fantasy adventure gets the Merry Marvel treatment! Eisner Award-winning writer/artist Eric Shanower (Age of Bronze) teams up with fan-favorite artist Skottie Young (New X-Men) to bring L. Frank Baum’s beloved classic to life! When Kansas farm girl Dorothy flies away to the magical Land of Oz, she fatally flattens a Wicked Witch, liberates a living Scarecrow and is hailed by the Munchkin people as a great sorceress…but all she really wants to know is: how does she get home?
