It’s New Comic Book Day!

by on Jul.03, 2011, under A Comic Book Guy and His Comics

This past week’s visit to Keith’s Komix has us catching up with DEADPOOL. I still behind on a few of the titles I normally pick up but I think this whole idea of only allowing myself to spend $20 on our weekly visits has definitely been a good thing. There will always be one week out of the month where there will be only a few releases and that’s an opportunity to just catch up on stuff I have sitting in my pull box rather than buying extra books I don’t necessarily need right away and just waiting for the collected hardcover to come out. i.e. UNCANNY X-FORCE, FLASHPOINT etc.

  • BOOSTER GOLD #44
  • BRIGHTEST DAY AFTERMATH: THE SEARCH FOR SWAMP THING #1
  • DEADPOOL #35-39
  • FLIGHT Vol. 1
  • JUSTICE LEAGUE of AMERICA #58
  • PLANET OF THE APES #1

MY PICK OF THE WEEK: JUSTICE LEAGUE of AMERICA #58

SERENA’S PICK OF THE WEEK: PLANET OF THE APES #1
PLANET OF THE APES #1

Writer(s): Daryl Gregory, Artist(s): Carlos Magno
Get your hands on these damn dirty Apes! Beginning an all-new series that takes place before the original 1968 Planet of the Apes movie in the continuity of the first five films! Ape society has reached a new golden age. But there are ripples of dissent in both the ape and human ranks. Tensions will rise and soon all will be caught in chaos! And amidst all this uncertainty, what is the fate of…The Lawgiver? Written by award-winning novelist Daryl Gregory!

SERENA’S GRAPHIC NOVEL OF THE WEEK: FLIGHT Vol. 1
FLIGHT VOL.1

Originally published by Image Comics in 2004, Flight, Volume One launched this graphic novel series with a resounding bang. Since then the Flight series has steadily increased in popularity–and now all of the Flight backlist will be coming to Villard!

Flight, Volume One received a great boost when graphic novel hero Scott McCloud praised the quality and artistry of the book in an afterward entitled THE YEAR COMICS TOOK FLIGHT. Little could readers know at the time how prophetic McCloud’s words would prove to be.

“Regardless of where it’s shelved, this book belongs in every library.” — Library Journal on Flight, Volume One

Authors included in Flight, Volume One are: Bengal, Bill Mudron, Catia Chien, Chris Appelhans, Clio Chiang, Derek Kirk Kim, Dylan Meconis, Enrico Casarosa, Erika Moen, Hope Larson, Jacob Magraw-Mickelson, Jake Parker, Jen Wang, Joel Carroll, Kazu Kibuishi, Khang Le, Neil Babra, Philip Craven, Rad Sechrist, and Vera Brosgol.

I’m still on the fence about DC’s RELAUNCH and I will make all the effort to heed the advice of Keith and be sure to visit the DC Nation panels at SDCC 2011 before deciding on whether or not to drop most of my DC Titles and wait for the graphic novels or just stick with a few of the titles that look somewhat worth picking up.

HAPPY READING!

It’s New Comic Book Day!

by on Jun.23, 2010, under A Comic Book Guy and His Comics

The weather has been pretty wet with thunderstorms today but there was a brief moment of sunshine and that’s when we made our run to Keith’s Komix. Our pick-up is pretty DC heavy, which is never a bad thing. I’ve decided to continue picking up Power Girl because I’ve never read a bad Judd Winick story and Serena likes Sami Basri’s art style. BATMAN: THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE continues this week and I’m all the more curious about Bruce’s current predicament and how the world’s greatest detective will resolve it. In the light of BRIGHTEST DAY, GREEN ARROW # 1 kicks off. What is the deal with the Star Forest exactly and why is Ollie all up in that?! This weekend’s readings will surely be enjoyable as always. DC NATION FTW!

  • BATMAN: STREETS OF GOTHAM # 13
  • BATMAN: THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE # 3

  • JOE THE BARBARIAN # 6
  • JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRY FOR JUSTICE
  • JUSTICE LEAGUE: GENERATION LOST # 4

Featuring the dynamic artwork of YANICK PAQUETTE.

SERENA’S PICK OF THE WEEK: POWER GIRL # 13

POWER GIRL # 13

Written by JUDD WINICK • Art and cover by SAMI BASRI

Power Girl dives headfirst into the next chapter of her life on Earth with new series writer Judd Winick (JUSTICE LEAGUE: GENERATION LOST) and artist Sami Basri (THE SHIELD)! And what events will draw her to her former JLI teammates from JUSTICE LEAGUE: GENERATION LOST?

HARDCOVER PICK OF THE WEEK: JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRY FOR JUSTICE

JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRY FOR JUSTICE

Written by JAMES ROBINSON; Art and cover by MAURO CASCIOLI

A new team of heroes – Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Supergirl, Atom, Shazam, Congorilla and Starman – unite to take a proactive approach to fighting crime! Following the deaths of JLA heroes Batman and Martian Manhunter, this new team stands determined to stop evil from ever striking so drastically again. But when Prometheus plans his revenge on the heroes, will this new team be ready to pay the cost for the justice they seek?

This has been out for some time now but I just got mine in the mail the other day from Amazon. It was a fantastic read. Thank you James Robinson for what looks to be as one of the most important stories of the Justice League ever to have been told! Definitely a must have hardcover graphic novel!

It’s New Comic Book Day!

by on Oct.22, 2009, under A Comic Book Guy and His Comics

When I said I was cutting a few titles from my pull list, I was dead serious. With this week’s pick up, X-Men Legacy and [Dark] Wolverine have been pulled from my pile and shelved without a second thought. No skimming through the issues were needed. Sure, it’s a new creative team and a new story arc in both books but my interest them have dwindled greatly from the past few story arcs that I’m not gonna bother just collecting the series for the sake of collecting. That would just be a waste of money. This cuts my Marvel pull to about 9 titles. Well, 8 titles, because Astonishing X-Men isn’t on any kind of regular schedule. My DC list keeps growing. I recently added Power Girl and Batman: Streets Of Gotham to my pull list. I really enjoyed the first 5 issues of each book and hope that both books have a long way to go before peaking.

  • BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL # 35
  • BATMAN: STREETS OF GOTHAM # 5
  • BLACKEST NIGHT: SUPERMAN # 3
  • DEADPOOL: MERC WITH A MOUTH # 4
  • JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA # 38
  • THE OUTSIDERS # 23
  • POWER GIRL # 6
  • SOULFIRE # 1
  • WOLVERINE: ORIGINS # 41

PICK OF THE WEEK: JUSTICE LEAGUE # 38

JUSTICE LEAGUE # 38

Written by James Robinson; Art and cover by Mark Bagley; Variant cover by Andy Kubert

A new era begins for the World’s Greatest Heroes as superstars James Robinson (STARMAN, SUPERMAN) and Mark Bagley (TRINITY, Ultimate Spider-Man) take over! It all begins as a one-time member of the JLA falls before he can warn the team of looming peril while what’s left of the JLA journeys to the heart of their past to decide if the team has any future at all.

Of course, that means this is the best time for a savage villain from the team’s past to attack the demoralized heroes! The team will have to muster enough will to win not only today, but in the harrowing months to come. It’s the start of a spanking new odyssey for the JLA that will lead in the coming months to a fresh line-up for DC’s flagship team. Get onboard now for the next epic chapter of the Justice League’s legacy!
