The Day The Earth Stood Still

Serena and I finally watched The Day The Earth Stood Still, the remake of the classic 1951 version of the same name. Overall we enjoyed this movie. The pacing was pretty good and the special effects were cool and didn’t overwhelm the film’s story or its actors. The acting was okay. It really wasn’t much of a stretch for Keanu to play an emotionally bland character. He’s only done it in nearly every film he’s been in. On a side note, next up for Keanu: Playing Spike Spiegel in the live action version of Cowboy Bebop! In case you didn’t know, the character of Spike is rather emotionless. The other actor’s I couldn’t really get a feel for. In all honesty, I wanted the movie to end with the genocide of humanity. Why root for the end of humanity? Because of where we are now as a species. We fight in wars rather than promote peace. Politics is corrupt and so are those that have more money than they know what to do with. The world rots as we rape her resources.
It boils down to my belief that humanity needs to be brought to extinction or to the brink of it to finally make us realize just how small we really are. Only then will we stop fighting against each other and start working together towards common goals of peace, the eradication of disease, poverty and the preservation of humanity as well as Mother Earth.
The story may be nothing but science fiction, but the reactions and the attitudes presented by its characters are all too familiar. Overall, The Day The Earth Stood Still was a pretty good disaster flick that comes second to The Day After Tomorrow.
