Taking My First Step Into A Larger World

Last year at the San Diego Comic-Con, I picked up the book Hi-Fi Color for Comics for Serena after we both sat in on a panel hosted by the authors Brian and Kristy Miller. Even though Serena is an excellent colorist, some of the techniques discussed at the panel were definitely interesting and Serena thought the book would prove useful. Recently I have been working as a freelance production artist for Bryan J.L. Glass and Mike Oeming cleaning up pages for the re-release of the Ship of Fools mini-series they worked on back in the early 90s. While it had nothing to do with coloring, it did put a lot of my Photoshop skills to the test. One day, I saw Serena coloring one of her awesome drawings and thought that since I have some basic skill with Photoshop, why not explore Digital Coloring? Now most of my skill in Photoshop is more on image manipulation so I would be learning a whole different set of techniques. Who knows, if I have enough fun with it, I might actually get good enough to color Serena’s artwork when she’s famous!
Above is a screen cap of my first lesson exercise called Flatting.
