Remember, Remember the 4th of November

Last night was a very historic evening. It was when the citizens of this great nation had cast their vote, naming Barack Obama the President Elect and his running mate, Joe Biden, the Vice President elect. With the TV on in the background, Serena and I were slowly moving into our new apartment. We had decided to paint the walls to give our new home a less dorm-esque appearance. It had been a long and enduring process but well worth it. When the historic announcement was made:
Serena had just finished painting the bathroom.

And I had just finished setting up my PC desk, tidying up the wires like I did with Serena’s desk hours earlier.

Naturally we stopped to catch the speeches by McCain and then by Obama. While McCain’s speech was dignified, it was tainted by the asshats who yelled “Boo” at the mention of Obama’s name by McCain. Newly President Elect Obama’s speech was, naturally, awe-inspiring. And from the random camera shots to the crowd in Grant Park, you could definitely tell the people were breathing sighs of relief and shedding tears of joy.
Change is coming. Serena and I have gone through some personal changes of our own. It’s not just moving to another apartment. There’s Serena getting her wisdom teeth out. It was a rough week for both of us. And in the end of it all, Serena knows she’s only got me and my family to lean on when the chips are down. Serena also got promoted to store manager. What makes this special is that this is her first time on a salary and she got the promotion in less than a year of being employed. I’m excited about the move even though my body hates me for it. Granted it’s not a condo or townhome, but we are making every effort to make our apartment our home. Painting is nearly done, only the kitchen is left. As we move stuff, we toss what’s not important and brainstorm ideas on how to decorate. Despite how stressful this has been for both of us, we’re quite content with the changes coming, both for us and for this country.

Tidying Up Messy Cables
by LoneWolf on Nov.04, 2008, under As Random As Random Gets
With all of the living room stuff moved in, I decided to take a break and work on organizing the cables laying on the ground at Serena’s PC desk. I remember my cousin Jason getting the Signum Cable management rack from IKEA.

I also remember installing it for him and what a pain in the ass it was. But it was the best solution I’ve seen so far in keeping your cables off of the floor and out of site. So I picked up two of them, one for my desk and one for Serena’s. It still was a pain in the ass, but quicker to install since the desk was empty. I layed the desk, front side down and found a spot behind the kickboard to set up the rack. Unfortunately the rack was to deep and there wasn’t enough overhang on her desk. So I took the claw and of the hammer (OLD BOY style) and carefully bent one side of the rack from 45 degrees to 90 degrees. The newly squared side would allow the rack to be mounted on the desk overhang without sticking too far out from the back.

I wound the cables around the teeth of the rack. After all the cables were in place, I zip-tied them to the rack so that they wouldn’t fall off. Enough slack was allowed so that the connections could be made without causing any tension. I then covered the slack with the Cable Zipper from The Container Store.

I can’t wait to do this to my desk. I’ll have to wait for the weekend though. Even though the install was easier, it still took some time. I still have a lot of moving to do and it has to be done by the end of the week.
